Case Study Vacay

An innovative app that helps you find your ideal holiday by searching for the right weather

Vacay is the first app that lets you find your ideal holiday destination by searching for the type of weather you like.

It’s the brainchild of TV weather presenters John Hammond and Sara Thornton, who wanted to answer the age old question: ‘where’s nice this time of year?’.

I was one of two creatives involved in creating the Vacay branding, and the lead on the app’s UX and user journey.

With a simple ‘V’ motif that symbolises sun and slopes, and a bright colour palette, the brand was designed to stand out from the crowd. The compelling, playful and engaging visuals match perfectly with the friendly tone of voice used in John and Sara’s descriptions of each location.

For the app itself, we held workshops to research the market, identify customer segments and to establish the content that users wanted to see, as well as engaging in substantial planning and prototyping phases to identify how to best cater for several different user scenarios and routes through the app.

The result is a carefully considered user journey, with each step crafted to ensure progression and to mitigate dropouts along the customer journey.

Interface elements are tactile and familiar – with sliders and dials to select temperature, flight times and even the chance of rain. The priority was to keep the app visual and interactive, avoiding cramped pages filled with checkboxes and dropdowns, without bloating it over too many steps.

The app won a 2021 The Drum Roses award.
